Instructional Design Theory & Models

Executive Summary

ACLSA Instructional Design Process Model and

Technological Integrated Lesson Plan

This project required me to develop and implement an instructional design model based on successful learning theories and outcomes.  The content topic is part of a STEM unit demonstrating Information Literacy using content curation and Web 2.0 Tools. The artifact includes a paper explaining the past theories and development of the model as well as the lesson plan based on the processes of the model. The lesson plan includes disposition, responsibilities, self-assesment indicators, lesson objectives, and links to all the resources used during the instruction.

Working with the director of a local afterschool program, I coordinated the necessary technologies, created the instructional materials, and scheduled learning sessions. We began in October of 2016 and completed the assessments in December. After the experience,  I completed a written assessment and recorded a presentation reviewing the experience.

The model I developed contains five main components; Analysis, Create, Learning Rooms, Safe House and Assessment of Discovery. It is based on the instructional design and development model, ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) created by Dick, Carey, and Carey in 2005, (Reiser, Dempsey 2012). It is also influenced by Dr. Sivasailam “Thiagi” Thiagarajan’s 4-Door model.

The theory behind the ACLSA model is by combining the components of the traditional, linear model, ADDIE, with the non-linear, self-guided 4-Door model, a learner would be provided with more options of engagement in their own learning. This engagement would improve learners’ motivation to participate in problem or project based learning environments.

Instructional Presentation

Included to the left is a 6 min recorded instruction where I have provided an overview of the Web 2.0 tool, ThingLink. The students are to utilize this and other online curation tools to complete their interactive infographic.

Project Reflection

As part of my studies in Educational Technology, I have learned an enormous amount about learning theories and processes for creating learning environments that successfully result in reaching lesson objectives. During this time, I came across Carol Dwecks writings referencing a Fix-Mindset vs Growth-Mindset theory. These two categories can corner students to an intrinsic way of learning for the rest of their lives. The ACLSA model is my attempt at providing a process of instructional design where both types of mindset can thrive.

The development process in this project gave me experience in integrating past theories and models into a contemporary learning environment. I also selected and used technological resources to support student learning. The environment promotes diversity and the technology used provides a variety of accessible material.

This design and integration experience has furthered my skills and knowledge of content pedagogy. It will continue to assist me in my professional environment as I research best practices for future development of instructional programs.

ACLSA Model Integrated Lesson Plan Assessment and Presentation

The included artifact is a lesson assessment on Content Curation and Thinglink as a tool to create an interactive infographic. This written assessment and presentation describes the model, the planning and process, as well as obstacles faced during the implementation. It is a detailed overview of the collaboration with other stakeholders to analyze needs, coordinate the technology needed and schedule instructional sessions. The written assessment includes the graphic organizers used for student self-assessment as well as a student evaluation of the instruction and technology used.

ACLSA Model Integration Project Presentation

My recorded presentation reviewing the project requirements, the model, lesson implementation, and lesson assessment. The presentation includes a reflection of the project and the professional benefits I have gained from the experience.
