Lesson One

Visual arts in relation to history and culture

LESSON OBJECTIVES:  Students will be introduced to three different art styles and artists. Students will gain knowledge of how to identify characteristics of different art genres, compile research, and present information in an organized manner. Students will self-determine goals. The students will be introduced to digital photography and web 2.0 tools that they may want to utilize during their project

GUIDED ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

Which artist attracted your interest and how can you relate to their artwork?

INSTRUCTION AND ACTIVITIES

Part 1 (25 min):

Direct instruction: Activate Knowledge 10 minutes (Art Teacher and LMS):  

  1. Art Teacher will display a slideshow of chosen artwork on the Smart Board. 

  2. The teacher will first ask the students to have notebooks ready so they can write down thoughts about the shown resources.
    The notes will help them determine their own choices for the future project they will complete.

  3. The teacher will have a brief overview of Renaissance, Impressionism and Twentieth Century art and how they each influenced the art world.

  4. The three artists pulled from each time period as examples of influence are: 

  5. Leonardo Da Vinci and his drawings, paintings and inventions during the Renaissance period.

  6. Claude Monet and the development Impressionism painting.

  7. For 20th Century art, Helen Frankenthaler and abstract painting will be discussed.

  8. The teacher will engage the students by using a number of different resources online and in print such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Website and the curated website created as a student resource, Symbaloo Curated Art Resource.  Art genres, time periods, and artists will be listed and identified during lesson.

INSTRUCTION AND ACTIVITIES

Part 1 (25 min):

Direct instruction:
Activate Knowledge 

  1. Display a slideshow of chosen artwork..

  3. Briefly review Renaissance, Impressionism and Twentieth Century art and how they each influenced the art world.

INSTRUCTION AND ACTIVITIES

Part 2 (25 min):

Present Goals for a Final Project!

This is only an introduction to the completed project so the students can begin the project with the end in mind.

The students will have two choices:

A) Create and document their own artwork influenced by the artist of their choosing.

  • Their presentation will need to include A brief summary as to why they chose this artist.

  • How their artwork influenced the A description of the medium the artist works in as well as their chosen medium and how they differ avoiding plagiarism.

  • Using a web based presentation tool, present their research and final piece of artwork.

                                      Or

B) Develop a presentation focusing on a well-known artist either past or contemporary.

  • A photographic documentation of artwork should be established within the presentation.

  • How their artwork influenced the time period and impact on the art world.

  • Why this artist and their artwork influenced the student.

  • Siting Resources in order to avoid plagiarism.

  • Present their research using a web based (Web 2.0) presentation tool.

 

Demonstrate!

  1. Review photography with the students, explaining the documentation process of their project.

  2. Photographs will need to be taken of their artwork throughout creation.

  3. Demonstrate photographs uploaded to web 2.0 tools and presentation (as done in the example presentation) to ensure students understand the file formatting of photos and videos and how they upload to the online programs.

  4. Demonstrate searching and gathering web based information as well as siting these resources for students who choose to focus on an artist rather than create their own artwork.

  5. Present students with an example Prezi to demonstrate the type of presentation expected.
